Il munaciello (in napoletano significa ‘’piccolo monaco’’) è il personaggio esoterico più noto, temuto e nominato dal popolo partenopeo: uno spirito bizzarro che si comporta in modo imprevedibile e sul quale vi sono sorte infinite leggente metropolitane e detti popolari. Al suo comportamento dispettoso spesso si accompagnano benevoli ‘’lasciti’’ in moneta; ma non bisogna raccontare l’accaduto a nessuno altrimenti egli si accanirà nei nostri confronti. Il popolo napoletano ha due versioni sulle origini del munaciello. Inizialmente tale figura veniva associata alla Napoli sotterranea, agli antichi gestori dei pozzi d’acqua, i cosiddetti pozzari, che avevano facile accesso alle case passando attraverso cunicoli che servivano a calare il secchio nei pozzi. I pozzari-munacielli facevano i dispetti nelle abitazioni quando i proprietari dei pozzi non provvedevano a pagarli per i loro servizi. Si tratta di una versione che probabilmente è stata inventata dalla fantasia popolare per dare al munaciello caratteristiche ‘’bonarie’’. Accanto ad essa c’è la teoria esoterica che rende il munaciello una presenza demoniaca in veste di frate. Questi tenterebbe ogni volta, con piccoli o grandi doni, di comprarsi un’anima. Questa versione è associata ad una vicenda, svoltasi nel 1445, che narra dell’amore contrastato di due giovani: Catarinella Frezza, figlia di un ricco mercante di stoffe, e Stefano Mariconda, un garzone. Il loro amore finì in tragedia. Stefano venne assassinato nel luogo dove i due innamorati erano soliti incontratosi in segreto, mentre lei fu rinchiusa in un convenuto dove diede alla luce un bambino malformato. Le suore del convenuto adottarono il bambino vestendolo sin da piccolo con abiti monacali e con il cappello per mascherarne le difformità. Per le strade di Napoli egli assunse l’appellativo di munaciello. Il bimbo morì in modo misterioso. Sin da subito gli vennero conferiti poteri magici, e la sua figura fu associata alla parte cattiva dell’anima umana.

The Neapolitan people have two versions of the origins of the munaciello. Initially this figure was associated with underground Naples, with the ancient managers of water wells, the so-called pozzari, who had easy access to the houses by passing through tunnels that were used to lower the bucket into the wells. The pozzari-munacielli made mischief in the houses when the owners of the wells did not pay them for their services. This is a version that probably was invented by the popular imagination to give the munaciello "good-natured" characteristics. Alongside it is the esoteric theory that makes the munaciello a demonic presence in the guise of a friar. He would try every time, with small or large gifts, to buy himself a soul. This version is associated with a story that took place in 1445, which tells of the thwarted love of two young people: Catarinella Frezza, daughter of a wealthy cloth merchant, and Stefano Mariconda, a boy. Their love ended in tragedy. Stefano was murdered in the place where the two lovers used to meet in secret, while she was locked up in a defendant where she gave birth to a malformed child. The defendant's nuns adopted the child, dressing him from an early age in monastic clothes and a hat to mask his differences. On the streets of Naples he assumed the nickname of munaciello. The child died mysteriously. From the beginning he was given magical powers, and his figure was associated with the bad part of the human soul.
